Now the New Year’s over… time to book your summer holiday?

Firstly, Happy New Year to all!  We hope you all had an enjoyable break and welcomed in 2013 in style!

As people are making their way back to work and getting into the familiar routine, thoughts are already turning to summer holidays with many heading to the Internet to find the best deals; the old adage of book early to get the best price on flights and accommodation still rings true!  And according to tour operators, this weekend, or more precisely 6th January, tens of thousands of Britons are likely to book their summer break; they’ve even nicknamed it ‘Sunshine Sunday’!

This prediction is based on the purchasing patterns of holidaymakers over the last three years; one of the largest travel companies in Europe, Thomson, have said that they are expecting over two million website searches to be made this Sunday, however British Airways Holidays, who have recently launched their annual sale, believe that Monday will register the largest number of holiday bookings.

Thomson commented, “Over the last few years, we’ve seen a trend towards booking holidays earlier and with record bookings over Christmas, we’re expecting the rush to continue.”

British Airways Holidays Managing Director, Claire Bentley, added, “We anticipate a bumper booking day next Monday, with the return to work and start of a new school term, signalling the need for families to have sunnier climes to look forward to.”

Popular destinations for summer holidays include the old favourites, Greece, Majorca and the Canary Islands, but both companies also predict that destinations such as Mexico, Thailand, Dubai, Jamaica and St Lucia will also be popular.  And if you’re looking for those city breaks, then cities like Rome, Venice, Berlin and Barcelona are believed to be largely considered by many.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more exotic and some winter sun, then tour operators are predicting that North Africa will something of a revival, a welcome bit of news for tourist destinations in Egypt and Tunisia which have seen a rise of 45% and 40% respectively in bookings compared to the same period last year.
