AOA responds to report published by CBI

The AOA (Airport Operators Association) has responded to the CBI’s (Confederation of British Industry) report by concluding that adding just one extra flight to the largest high growth markets worldwide, amounting to 8 locations, would potentially increase trade by as much as £1 billion annually.  Now that’s quite a significant amount!

To AOA’s Chief Executive, Darren Caplan, this isn’t breaking news as he’s been advocating the increase in aviation connectivity to the Government for a while, and believes that it plays a key role in increasing the UK’s trade links with emerging economies around the world, as well as securing jobs and growth, and not just in the aviation industry.  He commented: “We simply cannot afford to fall behind out international rivals who are busy adding their air routes to high-growth regions, and reaping the benefits in terms of access to both existing and emerging markets.”

Ed Anderson, Chairman of the AOA, has also added his weight to the publication of the CBI’s report in his call for the Government to take action to boost the aviation sector, such as putting an end to the proposed increase in APD (Air Passenger Duty) and to encourage greater connectivity.   At the AOA’ recent Annual Dinner, Anderson emphasised aviation’s importance to the UK and its contribution of £50 billion to the economy, as well as supporting nearly one million jobs.  He is urging the Government to introduce policies that will promote long-term, sustainable growth, i.e. through the Aviation Policy Framework, which is due at the end of this month, plus looking at APD and ending current proposed increases, and commissioning an independent study into its impact on the UK economy.
