Londoners asked for their comments on airport expansion by GLA

This week the Greater London Authority (GLA) announced that they are asking Londoners to send in their views, plus any evidence they may have gathered, in their arguments for or against the expansion of airport capacity.  Alongside a similar enquiry by the Transport Select Committee, the GLA wishes to identify the current issues that people believe that Sir Howard Davies, who chairs the Government’s independent Airports Commission, should consider.

Boris Johnson believes that by 2030, London’s airports will be at capacity, yet aviation and environmental campaigning groups don’t agree but do say that current capacity could be more smartly utilised.  Those against expansion have questioned estimations in the increase of demand for air travel, particularly for business travel.

The launch of GLA’s investigation into airport capacity takes them into the hot debate of airport expansion, and aims to identify and highlight the issues regarding airport expansion.  A range of aviation groups and businesses have called for more airport capacity and there have been plenty of ideas put forward to the Airport Commission.  The GLA will review options for London in more detail including the building of additional runways at Heathrow, Stansted or Gatwick, utilising current airport capacity more effectively, creating regional hubs and the building of an airport in the Thames Estuary, although the GLA has already backed up its opposition to a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

The GLA will also collect views and evidence from business leaders, environmentalists and aviation experts, along with the general public, ensuring that all potential options are reviewed and considered.  Written submissions can be sent in up to 28th February 2013.  Alongside this, the Transport Committee will be holding two public meetings with experts on 15th January and 6th February 2013, with its findings produced in May 2013.
