Over 70% of UK travellers want to use their mobile phones inflight

One Poll, on behalf of AeroMobile, conducted a survey recently of 2,000 UK travellers regarding inflight connectivity, and I don’t think the results were too much of a surprise!  The results show that there is a big demand for inflight mobile services, with over 70% of respondents stating that they would use their mobile phones during a flight, if allowed.

In addition, almost half of respondents said they would send text messages, and 44% revealed that they would like to access their apps, including Twitter and Facebook.  The survey also indicated that a third of travellers would surf the Internet, whilst a quarter would use online games via their mobile devices to distract themselves; just 19% of people said they would make a call at 30,000ft…

This latest survey by mobile phone operator for the aviation industry, AeroMobile, certainly reflects a growing trend in the UK, and also demonstrates how dependent many of us have become on our mobile devices and smartphones.  This is also indicative of the response that most people expect inflight mobile connectivity to become standard practice within the next couple of years.

Head of Revenue Development at AeroMobile, Kevin Rogers, confirmed that the results of their survey reflected their experiences at AeroMobile.  He said: “We know there is demand from consumers; traffic on our network in January outstripped the total traffic for the last six months of 2012, and we expect it to keep growing.”

Rogers added: “Last year 5.5 million devices connected to the AeroMobile network, and this year we’re doubling the number of airlines we’re working with to offer even more passengers the option of using their mobile phones inflight.”

The survey did highlight the generation gap when it comes to adopting new technology; over 80% of under 35s would use their mobile phones inflight, yet just over half of over 55s would do the same.  And contrary to popular belief, it’s the men who are more likely to pick up the mobile phone for a chat inflight!
